Register for Patient Access using username and password

Introduction

To ensure the highest level of security, Patient Access will now ask you to enter a 6 digit time-based passcode each time you sign-in, as well as your username and password. To access a passcode, you will need to install an authenticator app.

Note: If you have biometrics (Face ID or Touch ID) enabled, you will not be asked to enter an authentication code each time you sign-in. Alternatively, if you are within England, you can use NHS Login to access your Patient Access account instead.

New users registering for a Patient Access account

Enter your personal details.
Click Continue.
Enter your email address and create a password.
Accept the Terms and Conditions.
Click Create account.
Enter a mobile number (this is optional and you can choose to Skip for now).
Click Continue.
Now your account has been created you must verify your email address. An email will be automatically sent to the email address you registered your Patient Access account with. This will provide you with a link to verify your account.
Note: The verification email will expire in 24 hours. If you have not verified your email address within 24 hours, you can click  Re-send verification email  to send a new link to your email address.
You can click  Skip verification for now to verify your email address at a later time. However, please be advised that you can only skip verification for 10 days after this your account will be locked until you have verified your email address.
You will be prompted to install an Authenticator App on your device. Once you have done so, click Continue.
Open your third-party authenticator app and either scan the QR code or enter the text code provided in Patient Access.
Click Next.
Enter the 6-digit code that appears in your authenticator app.
Click Verify.
Your Patient Access account now has two-factor authentication applied using TOTP. When you next sign-in to Patient Access, you will be asked to enter your 6 digit code using your authenticator app.
Click Done to be directed to your Patient Access dashboard.

Installing an authenticator app

You will be prompted to install a third-party authenticator app as part of the process below. This app will provide you with access to the Time-Based One Time Passcode (TOTP) that will be required when signing in to Patient Access in future.

Please note:

You can use any authenticator app of your choice on your mobile, tablet or desktop device.
Many authenticator apps are free. The top reviewed apps listed in official app stores, such as the App Store or Google Play, are more likely to be reputable.
Be aware of 'sponsored' advertised products, which can be listed high up the store.
Be aware of adverts appearing within other apps (including authenticator apps).
Do research before installing any additional apps / software to check if it's reputable.
If an app charges a subscription fee (or offers an initial free trial) you can always choose a different authenticator app.

NHS login and Patient Access

NHS login is only available in England and won’t be available for proxy users.

To ensure the highest level of security, Patient Access will now ask you to enter a 6 digit time-based passcode each time you sign-in, as well as your username and password if you do not use NHS login. To access a passcode, you will need to install an authenticator app. You will only be asked for your Memorable Word the first time you log in.

Introduction

NHS login has been added to Patient Access as an alternative method for users to register, sign in and link to their GP practice. It will be available for:

New users who register with Patient Access.
Existing users who sign in to Patient Access.
Users who have limited access to the GP practice’s online services and want full access.
Users who want to link to a different GP practice after changing GP practices.

You can use NHS login if you already have NHS login credentials or you can create an NHS login account.

To link to your GP practice you will have to complete NHS login’s ID verification steps online, in order to verify your identity. NHS login has its own methods to verify users and the timeframe of this verification check may vary at their end.

Register using NHS login (new Patient Access users)

You can register as a new user using NHS login.

Some practices may also offer online registration which creates an initial account with limited access until you provide ID at your practice.

Select Register using NHS login, you'll be redirected to the NHS login page. Follow the instructions on NHS Login.
Once these details have been verified you will be taken back to Patient Access.

Your account has been created and you can now link to your GP practice. You can link to your GP practice using a registration letter that they have provided, or using NHS login. More information is available further down this page.

You can also set up Patient Access sign in details, which will allow you to sign in using your Patient Access sign in details or NHS login. The next section provides further details.

Sign in screen (existing Patient Access users)

When you sign in to Patient Access you'll be presented with the additional option to Sign in with NHS login.

Select Sign in with NHS login, you'll be redirected to the NHS login page.
Follow instructions on NHS login.
Once these details have been verified you will be taken back to Patient Access and the following message is displayed. To associate your account, confirm your password.
Then, confirm your current Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Once completed, you have successfully associated your Patient Access account with NHS login. An email will be generated to confirm this. You can now sign in using your Patient Access sign in details or NHS login.

Your Patient Access Sign in details and NHS login settings can be viewed and edited in the Account details section.

Link to your practice

If you have not linked to your GP practice yet, you can use the NHS login to link to your practice.

If you have previously linked to your GP practice using Patient Access, and your linkage is now either lost or broken, you may need to contact your GP practice to reset your account linkage key before you can link to your practice again. The 'Still unable to link to your GP practice?' section below provides further information.

Link with an existing and verified NHS login account

Select Link Your GP Practice.
You will be offered 2 options:
- Continue with registration letter
- Continue with NHS login
Select Continue with NHS login.
Note: The More about NHS login link will provide a pop-up with useful information.
You will now be directed to the NHS login page.
If you signed in to Patient Access with Patient Access credentials, NHS login will ask you to sign in by entering your email address and password, then a security code which is sent to your mobile phone.
You will have to complete the ID verification steps with NHS login before being linked to your GP practice.
Your GP practice is now linked to your Patient Access account.
Note: If you are a first time user, a pop up will appear asking you to use your NHS number. Click Ok.

An email will be generated to confirm your NHS login status.

Link without an existing and/or verified NHS login account

Linking to your practice in these circumstances is a 2-step process:

Step 1 - Link with NHS login (verification process)

Select Link Your GP Practice.
You will be offered 2 options:
- Continue with registration letter
- Continue with NHS login
Select Continue with NHS login.
Note: The More about NHS login link will provide a pop-up with useful information.
You will now be directed to the NHS login page.
Follow the instructions on NHS login.

Step 2 - Link to your practice (complete the process)

Once you have received the email from NHS login confirming your verification was successful, follow the steps below to complete the process.

Repeat steps 1-8 detailed above.
You'll be asked to enter your email address, then NHS login password, then a security code which is sent to your mobile phone.
Your GP practice is now linked to your Patient Access account.

Services are not currently available

If, for whatever reason, we cannot link your account to your practice, a message will be displayed asking you to try again later.

Still unable to link to your GP practice?

If you had already linked to your GP practice in Patient Access (PA), then delete your PA account, your online access to your GP practice services is also deleted. If you register again and are unable to link to your practice, you may need to request one of the following actions from your practice:

Ask your practice to reset your account linkage key. You can then use NHS login to sign in to PA and link to your practice by verifying your identity online via NHS login.
Alternatively, you will need to contact your practice to get a new registration letter. You will need to verify your identity with your practice. You can then either use the NHS login or registration letter to link to your practice again.

Forgotten passwords

If you forget your password you can use the Forgot Password link on the sign in screen to recover your account and reset. If you've previously signed in using your Patient Access details you will receive a link via email which will allow you to reset the password.

If you've previously signed in using NHS login, no email will be sent and you can use NHS login to sign in and/or reset your details if required.

Link to your GP practice

Depending on the clinical system your GP practice uses you may notice small differences in certain areas of Patient Access. These changes have been detailed below.

Patients registered in Scotland will be asked for more details, e.g. CHI number, in order to link to their practice. NHS login is only available to patients in England and the Isle of Man.

Linking your Patient Access account to your GP practice provides a wide range of benefits, for example booking a GP appointment or ordering your repeat medication online. There are two different ways you can link your Patient Access account to your GP practice. Select the option below that meets your requirements:

Link your account using a registration letter provided by your GP practice
Link your account using NHS login (England and Isle of Man only)

Link using a registration letter

Ask your practice for a Patient Access registration letter.

When you collect the letter from your practice, you'll need to take proof of identity (e.g. your driving licence or passport) with you.

When you have a registration letter, use the steps below to link your Patient Access account to your GP practice.

Select Link Your GP Practice, at either the end of the registration process, or from the navigation pane.
Select Continue with registration letter.
Enter the Linkage key, ODS code, Account ID from the registration letter.
Note: Patients based in Scotland will also need to enter their CHI number.
Select Confirm details.
Confirm your personal details by completing the required fields.
Note: The personal details must match the details held by your practice.
Select Link account.
On the confirmation screen, select Done.
Your account has been linked to your practice.

Practice merges and Patient Access

If you have any issues at all relating to linking to your new practice, please contact Patient Access Support Team, not your practice.

If your practice closes and merges with another practice, you will be required to link to your new practice using Patient Access.

Link with a registration letter

Alternatively, you can link to your practice using NHS login.

Once you have been issued with a registration letter for the new practice, you can link to the practice using the steps below:

Sign in with your existing details.
You will only have access to a restricted account at this point.
Click on your name in the top right-hand corner, then select Account.
Scroll down to the Link a GP practice or person section.
Select Link to my practice.
Enter the details from the registration letter.
You are now linked to your new practice and you'll have access to all enabled services.

Unlinked Patient Access accounts

As with a linked Patient Access account, each account will need a unique email address.

An ‘unlinked’ version of Patient Access is now available for patients who don’t need to link to their GP practice, but may wish to book pharmacy appointments (e.g. for travel vaccinations), or search for health advice.

Patients can still link to their GP practice at a later date if the surgery uses EMIS software and supports Patient Access.

Patients can register using the app or site, then skip the final stage of linking to their GP practice.

Benefits of registering for Patient Access

With an unlinked account you can:

Book non-GP appointments (for example pharmacy appointments).
Get health advice.
Find NHS self-referral services.
Your Reads.

Additional benefits of linking to your practice

To find out if your practice supports Patient Access, use the ‘Link Your GP Practice’ option in the navigation pane and search using the practice postcode.

There is also a link under My account (available when you select your name). Alternatively, enquire at your practice and if Patient Access is supported, they will provide you with a registration letter.

With a linked account you can also:

Book GP appointments.
Order repeat medication.
View your medical record.
Message your GP (non-urgent enquiries only).
Act on behalf of someone (proxy).

Register for Patient Access

On the Patient Access sign in screen, select Register now.
Enter your personal details.
Note: The sex field is optional.
Enter your account details.
Note: The Mobile phone and Marketing fields are optional.
Accept the Terms and Conditions.
Select Create account.
Your account has been created.
Verify your email address. Now your account has been created you must verify your email address. An email will be automatically sent to the email address you registered your Patient Access account with. This will provide you with a link to verify your account.
Please note:
- The verification email will expire in 24 hours. If you have not verified your email address within 24 hours, you can click Re-send verification email to send a new link to your email address.
- You can click Skip verification for now to verify your email address at a later time. However, please be advised that you can only skip verification for 10 days, after this your account will be locked until you have verified your email address.
Once you have clicked on Verify my email address in the verification email that was sent to you, you can then click Sign in to Patient Access.
Next choose one of the following options:
1. Link your GP practice (to link to your practice).
2. Skip for now (you can always link later using the Navigation pane or the My account section).
You will receive an email confirming the registration.

Deleting your Patient Access account

If you wish to delete your Patient Access account, you can delete the account yourself.

Log in to your Patient Access account.
Access the 'Account' menu:
Website: Click your name (top right) then select Account from the drop down menu
App: Tap the Account icon (top right)
Mobile browser: Tap Menu (top left) then select your name, then select Account from the drop down menu
Select Account Settings.
Scroll down to Account deletion and select Find out how to delete your account here.
Read the information and select Delete account.
Enter your Patient Access password to confirm the account deletion.
Select Delete account.
Your account has been deleted.

If you register again and are unable to link to your practice, you may need to request one of the following actions from your practice:

1. Ask your practice to reset your account linkage key. You can then use NHS login to sign in to PA and link to your practice by verifying your identity online via NHS login.

2. Alternatively, you will need to contact your practice to get a new registration letter. You will need to verify your identity with your practice. You can then either use the NHS login or registration letter to link to your practice again.
