Clinical Research Studies is a new option on the Patient Access menu, where patients can register their interest to participate in future studies relevant to them, view information explaining what clinical research is all about, and access studies when they become available.

This is currently only available to patients who are linked to their GP practice and the practice use EMIS Web as their clinical software.

If you are eligible, a list of relevant studies is displayed. These can be in different stages of recruitment, and are visible with the details of their sponsor.

Select your name in the top <g class="gr_ gr_24 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" id="24" data-gr-id="24">right hand</g> corner.

If your Patient Access account is linked to your GP practice and they have enabled the option to update your contact details, you can do this within the Contact Details section of your account. These changes will send a request to your GP practice to update their records.

Verify email address

Verifying your email address provides additional security for your account and allows you to confirm that the email address linked to your Patient Access account is correct and belongs to you as the owner of your account.

New users registering for Patient Access

Once you have created your account, you must verify your email address. An email will be automatically sent to the email address you registered your Patient Access account with. This will provide you with a link to verify your account.

The email is valid for 24 hours. If you don't verify the email within 7 days, a new email can be requested when you next sign in to Patient Access.

The confirmation message once your account has been created

Your email address is now verified.

The confirmation message once your email address has been verified

Troubleshooting for newly registered users

I cannot find my verification email

After creating a Patient Access account you will automatically be sent a verification email to the email address you registered with. Please check the inbox of your email address and also check the junk/spam folder in case it has ended up there. If you are still unable to find it, sign in to your Patient Access account and then click Re-send verification email.

I made a mistake when entering my email address/I need to change my email address

You will be able to change your email address by signing in, selecting Skip verification for now and then going to your account details. However, you will only be able to do this within 10 days after registration.

If you do not change your email address within 10 days of registering your Patient Access account, you will be unable to access your account and will need to contact our Support team.

Existing users

When you sign in to your account you will be required to verify your email address. This will be presented as a pop up message advising you that your email address is not yet verified.

Message displayed in Patient Access

To verify your email address:

Select Send verification email.

Sign in to your email account, find the verification email sent to you and then click the button Verify your email address. If the button does not work then copy and paste the link contained at the bottom of the verification email into your web browser.

Your email address is now verified.

You can skip this process by selecting Skip for now if the email address is no longer correct. However, it’s important that you update this in your account settings to ensure your account remains secure. You can then verify the correct address.

Troubleshooting for existing users

I cannot find my verification email

Please check the inbox of your email address and also check the junk/spam folder. If you are still unable to find it, sign in to your Patient Access account and then click Send verification email to send a new verification email.

I made a mistake when entering my email address/I need to change my email address

You will be able to change your email address by signing in, selecting Skip for now and then going to your account settings.

I have verified my email address but I am unable to sign into my account

Follow the guide on How to reset my password to reset your account.

The verification email link does not work/says it has expired

When a verification link is sent to your email address you are given 24 hours in which to use the link to verify your email account. If it has been more than 24 hours then you will need to sign into your account again and select ‘Send verification email.
If you move GP practice, and they offer Patient Access, you don't have to create a new Patient Access account. You can obtain a linkage document (registration letter) from your new practice, then link your existing account to them using the My GP Practice screen of Patient Access.

The My GP Practice screen

Changing your GP practice

First obtain a linkage document (registration letter) from your new practice. This does not need to be collected in person and can be emailed to you. Contact your practice for details. Alternatively, you could change your practice using NHS login.

Use the linkage document (registration letter) to link to your new practice.

Sign in to your Patient Access account.

Select Account (located under your name).

Select the My GP Practice screen.

Select Change my GP Practice.

Select the agreement box, then select Link to my new GP practice.

Below the question 'Have you received a registration letter from your practice?', select Yes.

Enter the Linkage Key (which is recorded on the linkage document).

Enter the Account ID (which is recorded on the linkage document).

Select Confirm.

Confirm the personal details held by your practice, then select Continue.

Enter your password, then select Link account.

On the confirmation screen, select Done.
Your account has been linked to your new practice.

Link to a practice or patient

Depending on the clinical system your GP practice uses you may notice the option for Link to a practice or user is not available.

In the Account section, at the bottom of the Account Details screen, you will see options under the heading 'Link a GP practice or person'. The available options are detailed below.

Connect with your practice (or a patient for proxy users)

Use this option if:

You have moved practices, used Patient Access at your old practice, and have a registration letter from your new practice.

You have been registered as a proxy user for a patient or relative, and already have a Patient Access account.

If you move practice, your old practice will close your Patient Access account in their clinical system, however, the account details are still held on the Patient Access website. The account will be restricted, as you are no longer linked to a practice, but you can still access the account and link to your new practice. This essentially means you don't have to register from scratch, just sign in and link to your new practice. To do this, you first need to obtain a registration letter from your new practice. The details on the letter will enable you to link to them and continue using Patient Access.

You would use this same process if you have been registered as a proxy user for a patient or relative, and already use Patient Access. This process will allow you to link your account to the patient.

Once you have been issued with a registration letter for the new site, you can link to the practice (or patient) using the steps below:

Sign in with your existing details.
You will only have access to a restricted account at this point.

Click on your name in the top right-hand corner, then select Account.

Scroll down to the Link a GP practice or person section.

Select Link to my GP practice (to link to your practice).

Enter the details from the registration letter.
You are now linked to your new practice (or the patient you are caring for) and you'll have access to all enabled services.

Alternatively, for patients who have moved practices, Patient Access can send you a delete account email and you can delete your account and re-register from scratch at your new practice. Contact us here to make the request.

Requesting access to practice services

Certain services, such as viewing your medical record, nominating a pharmacy, changing contact details and messaging, are only available to practices in England and certain parts of Northern Ireland at this time.
